Both boys and girls basketball is a winter sport for both boys and girls. Students in grades five through eight can try out for the basketball teams in November. Many of our alums have gone on to play at the Varsity level in High School. Saint Mary hosts a basketball tournament annually in memory of Sean McInerney, Saint Mary alum. This tournament is held every year over Christmas break.
The volleyball teams hold tryouts in February for boys and August for girls. The program is open to 6th-8th graders. Both boys and girls teams have enjoyed great success over the part few years including our 8th grade boys being the 2010 Conference Champions
Our cross country team is open to all boys and girls from 4th – 8th grade. Simply, it’s a great way to introduce your 4th grade student to athletics at St. Mary School. The cross country program has four teams, Junior Varsity Boys and Girls (4th thru 6thgraders) and Varsity boys and girls (7th and 8thgraders). We complete during the fall from August to mid-October in 8-10 races and Invites including state competitions at the end of the season.
Cross Country is a great way for student athletes to improve their strength and endurance for all sports. We highly encourage St. Mary students involved in other sports such as football, basketball, and volleyball to join the cross country team as conditioning for their other programs.
Third and fourth grade boys and girls practice once a week and compete on Saturday mornings before the Saint Mary football games. Flag Football is a fun and friendly environment to learn the fundamentals of a team sport. Pancake breakfast and Spirit Week are all traditions that surround our football programs and bring a sense of fun and community to our school. Go Bison!
Saint Mary School is the only elementary school in the area that has a golf team for students! Formed in 2010, the golf team is open to boys and girls in grades 3-8. The season begins officially in the winter with a PGA or LPGA pro working with our students at the Buffalo Grove Golf Dome on fundamentals and etiquette. In the spring the team moves outside for rounds at several local golf courses. Staff at the Dome and area golf clubs continue to be impressed with the behavior and enthusiasm of our young golfers!
Seventh and eighth grade girls are welcome to try out for the spring softball season. Girls will learn fundamentals while having a great time and becoming a team! The team participates in the Northwest Catholic Conference.
