Saint Mary School Uniform – FAQs

Why was the uniform changed?

As our current dress code evolved to include several colors and styles of clothing, there was agreement between parents, teachers and administration, that our dress code no longer celebrated the fact that we are a Catholic school.  The Saint Mary School uniform was changed to unite our students in their appearance.

My child has navy blue “uniform style” pants that are NOT Dennis brand, can he wear them?

Yes!  Although Dennis is our uniform provider and does carry navy uniform pants and shorts, navy blue uniform style pants from other retailers are also acceptable to wear.  (Please note: The Dennis pants are the model for “uniform style”.  Cargo pants and pants with other embellishments are not acceptable.)

Which logos are approved for the transition year 2011-2012?

ALL of the old logos (SMS, St. Mary, Saint Mary School Buffalo Grove) that are currently worn as part of our dress code are acceptable on white and light blue polo shirts in the transition year.

Does my child need a separate pair of shoes for gym class or can she wear her gym shoes with her uniform?

Shoes worn with the school uniform should be black, brown or navy; gym shoes are acceptable as long as they meet these criteria.  Alternately colored or otherwise embellished shoes are not acceptable with the school uniform.

What will happen to our old, retired uniform pieces?

No uniform pieces will be discarded.  Several Big Shoulders schools will benefit from our retired uniform pieces, including the logoed pieces.  A collection box will be in the school office for donations.

Thank you for supporting the new uniform policy and Saint Mary School.   If you have additional questions, please don’t hesitate to ask!
